Simple but Useful Moving Tips

Moving has challenges, but you can lessen them with a plan. The best way to get organized is to go through each step of your move with purpose and intention. Here are some moving tips that can help you get started.

Start packing early!

Start packing early. That is one of the best moving tips you will ever get. Much earlier than you think you need to. This will keep you on track and free up your time closer to the move-out date.

The best way to do this is by keeping a packing list with you so that when an item comes into your head, it goes on the list immediately. That way, if something comes up unexpectedly and needs immediate attention (like last-minute gifts or clothing), it can be handled quickly without adding extra stress.

This is also an excellent way to ensure that nothing gets lost in transit—if something doesn’t go into one of the boxes, it probably won’t end up at all!

Label everything that you care about!

You should label everything that you care about. No matter how small the item is. All of your boxes will be moved several times, likely by several different people and companies, and even if those people are exceptionally careful with your stuff, it’s unlikely that there won’t be some mix-ups along the way.

Labels help make those things make it to their final destination and, maybe even more importantly, give you a better idea of what’s in each box when it’s time to unpack.

Consider buying a portable storage

If you have any belongings that require special handling or won’t leave your house before you move out, consider buying a portable storage unit for temporary use. You can use it to store things you don’t want to move to until you find a new home and things that need to be moved before the house is fully emptied.

With a small container, this is an easy way to ensure that all your belongings are safe and secure while you prepare for the big move-out day. It’s also convenient for packing things like clothes or furniture before going through significant changes.

Color-code your boxes

This is one of my favorite moving tips! Color-coding your moving boxes is a great way to keep things organized, but it also has other benefits. Color-coding allows you to identify whose stuff goes where, which prevents people from accidentally mixing items up or mixing them in with someone else’s stuff. This can save you time and money when it comes time for everyone’s items to be returned, as it will be much easier for everyone involved if the person who owns an item knows precisely where their belongings are located.

By color-coding the boxes of each family member or roommate and marking them with their name on each box, you’ll know exactly where each item should go, making unpacking much easier for everyone involved.

Color-coding also helps ensure things don’t get lost during the move process. If there’s one box that holds all of your kitchen supplies (i.e., pots and pans), those things aren’t likely to get lost amid all the other items being packed away in different places throughout your home.
